Home of the Free Because of the Brave

Memorial DayToday in the US is a day of remembering the men and women who died while serving.  It's Memorial Day.

It reminds  me of how truly lucky we are to live in freedom.

Yesterday Mr. Mehnert and Ally went outside to put the big flag out in front of the house.  Ally took the little flag and started singing her own rendition of the Star Spangled Banner.  You know the kind where you hear half the words and most of the melody?

I asked her why we were putting the flag out front.

She said "Because it's 'Morial Day', Mommy. Happy Morial Day!"

A short time later we decided on a whim to pack up the car with a few essentials and head to Galveston Beach to enjoy the water, the sunset and have dinner.

Ally squealed with glee as we head into the water.  As I watched Ally and Mark head out further and further into the water I initially grew nervous.  I fear water I cannot see through so I stayed safely on the sandy part of the beach taking pictures.

They continued to splash and play freely with the waves rolling over them and Ally throwing her hands up in delight.

Ally came running towards the beach and said to me...

"You have to like what you are doing and not be so afraid, Mommy."

I stood there a little surprised at how perceptive she was of me. She was right.  What a brave little soul.

And we are the home of the free, because of the brave.

Happy Memorial Day, friends.  May your day be filled with happy memories.

Be free, be brave, and never forget those who fought for us.
